When it comes to Father’s Day, what Dad values most is enjoying it with the people who made him “Dad.” Planning something that celebrates Dad and his favorite activities is easy when you live at Weston at Santee. This year, ditch the Father’s Day tie and shirt for a creative celebration Dad will love.
Enjoy some lake time.
Who wants to stay inside when Santee’s beautiful outdoors beckons? Father’s Day is a great time to get some fresh air, exercise and family time at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, just three miles from Santee. Bring the bikes, fishing poles, hiking shoes or roller blades for a day of family fun. Walk-in access is allowed at the Lake 5 walk-in gate, or drive in through the main gate.
Go for a drive.
Is Dad a car aficionado? Then, give him a four-wheel-focused weekend. Wash and wax his favorite ride, clean the interior and load up the family. Head about 22 miles west to the Mission Beach Father’s Day Cruise, where you can enjoy a memorable day of car-gawking. Register by June 11 and you can get Dad a free commemorative t-shirt. The show runs from 10 am to 3 pm and is open to all cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Go caving on a kayak.
Give Dad an on-the-water experience the whole family will enjoy, with a day of kayaking at the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, about 15 miles west of Santee. With your own private guide, you’ll spend a few hours exploring the La Jolla sea caves. Or, bring Father’s Day to a memorable close with a sunset kayak cruise along the La Jolla shoreline.
Free fly a bird.
Ever wonder what it would be like to have a huge bird land on your hand? You and Dad can enjoy the hands-on experience of free flying birds of prey at SkyFalconry in Alpine, about 26 miles from Santee in the San Diego Mountains. Opt for a Private Hawk Walk across meadows and open trails, where your guide will teach you to call a hawk into a graceful landing on your glove.
Make it a movie night.
Pack up the family and the cooler, and make it a drive-in movie night. The Santee Drive-in Theatre offers family-friendly G-rated options, as well as more intense cinematic fare. Create an in-car snack bar with home-popped popcorn, bagged peanuts and Dad’s favorite mini candy bars.
