The world — or at least its food — is at your doorstep at Weston’s new master-planned community in Santee. Take the nearby Santee trolley to any of these SoCal eateries, save yourself the parking hassles, and enjoy a sophisticated night (or afternoon or morning) out basking in the world’s most enticing flavors. A few of our faves are below.
Blue Water Seafood
A short walk from the Washington Street Station, enjoy fresh wild-caught fish and seafood like halibut pulled from the Pacific Ocean — very likely that morning. For a lighter meal, start with salmon sashimi or ahi poke. Get there early for the widest selection at this popular spot; the fish doesn’t stick around long.
This San Francisco-style Little Italy bistro bustles with rustic Old World charm. All the mouth-watering Italian options are here, from golden fried baby calamari to burrata to linguini neri (squid ink pasta) to more adventurous fare like octopus.
The next time you catch a Padres game, offset that ballpark food at this healthy spot in the Gaslamp District. Featuring regional recipes from Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai and Bangkok, Lotus Thai uses fresh ingredients for their curries, noodles, and salads. They were even voted “Best Thai” in San Diego by multiple local publications. For a deal, go during happy hour to get 20 percent off sake on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Delight in Mediterranean specialties like hummus and baba ganoush at this family-owned restaurant in El Cajon. Not sure where to start beyond kebabs? Just ask. The friendly staff are happy to offer recommendations. But bring along cash as they do not accept credit cards.
Mario’s De La Mesa
Transfer to the orange line for this cozy La Mesa restaurant offering the best Mexican delights no matter the time of day. Enjoy a chorizo burrito or huevos rancheros at breakfast or opt for their signature dinner plates like mole and shrimp enchiladas after a day trip with the family. Or just grab a buñelo anytime, whether you want a sweet appetizer or dessert to go.
Why stop at food? Weston provides easy access to the best of San Diego’s outdoors. Make an afternoon of it and go on a hike at Mission Trails Regional Park to stimulate your appetite beforehand. Weston residents are also conveniently close by this popular spot, which is also accessible by light rail.
