School’s out for summer! While this is a great opportunity to build some lasting family memories, it can be hard to find ways to occupy your kids for weeks on end. Luckily, when you live at Weston, there are plenty of nearby activities that will make the whole family happy. Here are a few ideas to help you avoid hearing the dreaded “I’m bored” this summer.
San Diego County Library Summer Reading Program
Your kids may not be in the classroom over the summer, but there’s no reason they can’t keep learning! Encourage their love for reading through the San Diego County Library’s summer reading program. Participants can earn prizes simply by reading books and completing fun activities. You can sign your kids up online or at the branch nearest you until August 31. The Santee branch is located less than two miles from Weston, making it easy for your young readers to check out new books (and avoid overdue fines).
Mission Trails Regional Park
Little bodies have big energy. At Mission Trails Regional Park, your kids can burn off some of their excess energy as they explore one of the nation’s largest urban parks, with 7,220 acres of both natural and developed recreational areas. Best of all, it’s practically in your backyard! You can access Mission Trails through a path from West Hills Park. Be sure to check out the Family Discovery Walk, held the fourth Sunday of every month at 3 p.m. Tip: Bring your own water, and make sure everyone is wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
Boulder Ridge Swim Club
Summer isn’t summer without some pool time, and when you live at Weston, you have exclusive access to one of the newest, most dazzling pools in the area. The Boulder Ridge Swim Club features a resort-style swimming pool that’s perfect for swimming and splashing. It’s adult-friendly, too, with a jacuzzi spa, a fitness center, a lounge area and outdoor barbecue grills. When you’re ready to dry off, you can head over to the miles of connected hiking and cycling trails. At Boulder Ridge, you can experience a full day of fun without having to set foot in your car!
The New Children’s Museum
Located less than 20 miles from Weston in Downtown San Diego, the New Children’s Museum recently received the 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that make exceptional contributions to their communities. Your kids will have a blast as they make their way through the museum’s many exhibits, including the newest installation, Whammock!, in which visitors of all ages can climb up an oversized crocheted hammock. The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
San Diego Air and Space Museum
The San Diego Air and Space Museum is fun to visit any time of year, but this summer is an especially great time for families thanks to a new exhibit. Eureka! An Interactive History of Science for Children teaches children about scientific and technological advancements throughout human history through educational displays and hands-on activities. Don’t wait too long to check it out – the exhibit is on temporary loan from Artisans of Florence International in Florence, Italy. The museum, which is less than 20 miles from Weston, is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
