Imagine one of the largest urban parks in the nation being just outside your door. If you’re longing for an open-air retreat, living at Weston you can refresh and reconnect anytime in neighboring Mission Trails Regional Park. The over 7,200-acre park has many natural attractions to explore and enjoy every day in Santee including:
Making your way from Barker Way Trailhead or Cowles Staging Area, hike up the mountain 1.5 miles for the highest point in the city of San Diego. Take in the panoramic views of San Diego County including Lake Murray, Cabrillo National Monument and the downtown skyline.
East Fortuna Staging Area
Just west of Weston’s master-planned community, start at the East Fortuna Staging Area by foot, bike or horse and make your way through the grasslands. From there you can hike and bike up North and South Fortuna mountain summits.
Old Mission Dam
Six miles up the river from the mission’s settlement, friars in the early 1800s constructed what archaeologists believe was a 244-foot long, 13-foot thick, 13-foot wide dam. During its usage, water was released through gates into spillways along a tiled flume down the gorge, ending in a settled basin near the mission giving the padres the water they desperately needed.
Today, there is a still a small body of water held back by the structure. However, many San Diegans come through Old Mission Dam as a starting point for their hikes along with the excellent bird watching opportunities.
When you’re ready to get out on the water, head over to Lake Murray for kayaking, floating and boating. Rentals are available on site. You can also purchase bait here if you’re looking to reel in bluegill, channel catfish and trout. Anglers 16 years of age or older will need to have a California state fishing license.
Just to the north of the lake, tennis players enjoy informal and competitive games at Lake Murray Tennis Club. Brush up or fine-tune your skills with clinics for all age groups.
In addition to over 100 acres of dedicated open space in the community, Weston residents can currently walk from West Hills Park to a path leading into Mission Trails. A future park on the north end of Weston will also connect residents to a system of hillside trails.
