4 Ways to Stay Active in the Summer Heat

Posted on 02 Jul, 2019

Hello, sunny days, pool floats and icy drinks – summer has arrived in San Diego! If you love staying active but are concerned about working out in warmer weather, don’t let the rising temperatures derail your fitness routine. When you live at Weston in Santee, there are plenty of opportunities to stay active in the summer, no matter the temperature. Here are four of our favorites.

Exercise earlier or later.
Looking for a way to avoid the summer heat during a workout? Exercise earlier or later in the day when the sun is not as strong. If you’re a morning person, or if you’d like to become one, there’s no better way to kickstart your day than with an early walk or run along Weston’s community walking paths. Follow the trail to Boulder Ridge, Weston’s resort-style amenity center, where you have access to even more miles of hiking and cycling trails. For an evening exercise that can also help you unwind from the day, give yoga a try. The pool deck at Boulder Ridge is a great spot to perfect your downward dog.

Take it inside.
When it’s warm outside and there’s no time to adjust your workout schedule, sometimes the easiest solution is to just take your workout indoors. Fortunately for residents at Weston, there’s a state-of-the-art fitness center right down the street at the Boulder Ridge Swim Club. Get your heart rate up with one of the cardio machines, or get toned with a little weight lifting. With a full gym in your own neighborhood, making time for fitness just got a lot easier.

Get in the water.
More than just a fun summer activity, swimming is also a great workout because it uses virtually every muscle and is low-impact. Do some lap swimming or water aerobics at the Boulder Ridge Swim Club, where a sparkling swimming pool awaits. Don’t forget the sunscreen! After your workout, soothe your muscles with a soak in the jacuzzi spa.

Play in the shade.
Another fitness option for summer is to exercise in the shade. West Hills Park is located at the eastern edge of Weston’s Lake Ridge neighborhood, offering sports fields and the shade of gazebos for a cool workout. And not far from Weston, Santee Lakes is another shady place for picnicking, playing, fishing and more. Enjoy a run, walk or bike ride around the beautiful lakes under the palm trees.
