Since its start in 1970, Earth Day has become a worldwide environmental phenomenon. And nearly 50 years later, we’re still celebrating this day of caring for our planet. What can you do this year to be a part of the change? Stop using disposable plastic products, volunteer with a local group, attend an event – or all three. Here are some fun Earth Day events in San Diego to check out this month. Learn, explore and have fun!
Earth Fair 2019
This year, San Diego is celebrating its 30th annual Earth Fair 2019 on Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This free event is at Balboa Park, 17 miles from Weston, and has activities for the whole family with live music, international food courts, a parade, children’s play area and so much more. You can also bring items to be reused or repaired, learn more about the zero-waste lifestyle and see cars that run on alternative fuels. Visit or volunteer and be a part of this infamous fair.
Earth Day in San Diego
Get your hands a little dirty and volunteer with One Tree Planted, a Vermont-based nonprofit that focuses on global reforestation. They hold events around the world, and this year, they are hosting Earth Day in San Diego. Join the Clean & Green Team on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help beautify and protect the San Diego River, starting from the Mission Valley Preserve, just 15 miles from Weston. Meet your neighbors, and clean up storm debris and litter. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
2019 Earth Day 5K & 10K San Diego
Virtual Run Events is hosting their third annual Earth Day 5K & 10K. This year, the race will benefit Wild Earth Allies with at least 15 percent of every registration fee going to the nonprofit. The event is a virtual race, which is a race that can be run, or walked, from any location. On the road, trail, treadmill or even during another race. You can complete the race anytime in April 2019, so you can go at your own pace and time yourself. Once you submit your time, your earth medal will be shipped to you. Help change the world, one race at a time.
Naval Base Coronado Events
If you or a family member is actively serving in, or retired from, the military, then this event is for you. Naval Base Coronado and Navy MWR are hosting an event this month for military families in honor of Earth Day. The Fiddler’s Cove Beach Clean-Up with BBQ is on Saturday, April 20, 2019. Meet at Fiddler’s Cove Marina Boat House, 25 miles from Weston, at 10 a.m. to help clean up the beach and marina, keeping you and marine life a little bit safer.
